Who Am I

So my name is Ang Li. Ang is A.N.G.. Though my first name is the same as that of the modern chinese director Ang Lee, they are actually different chinese characters. My name in Chinese is 李昂, which has a fuzzy meaning of “being proud of myself”.

Education History

I attended my primary and middle school back in my hometown, Guiyang, which is a small city in southwest of China.

In 2002 I joined Tsinghua University in Beijing for undergraduate study, and studied under the major of Electronic Engineering. There I enjoyed the best four years in my life with lots of precious friends and respectful teachers.

In 2006 I went to the U.S. to pursue higher education in the field of computer networking research. I attended University of California, Irvine for my Ph.D study, and started my research under the supervision of Prof. Xiaowei Yang. Life as a graduate student is tough, but I enjoyed it pretty much because I could spend time on interesting and exciting research topic, and work with my talented advisor and labmates.

What Am I Interested In

First of all, my research topic. I love my research, and enjoy my life in building systems, testifying ideas, and discussing with intelligent people. Internet is the biggest and most complex man-made system till now, and it is very exciting to think how to change millions of people's life by improving Internet, making it advance.

I love music. I could not specify a special type of music I like most, because I'm always trying different genres. Also I am a HIFI headphone lover, with a small collection of vintage CD player, headphone amplifier, and most important, headphones. Check this page to see what I'm listening recently, and my collection of audio equipments. By the way, I was a piano player back in the 1990s, when I was still young and hadn't left my hometown. Now I'm trying to pick it up, with a YAMAHA keyboard.

I like playing TV and PC games. In my mind, good games are like good art pieces, and enjoying those games is like appreciating the great minds and ideas of the game creators. In particular I like FPS games with a good plot. So far the best game I have played is the Half-Life series. I also own a PS2 and owned a NDSL (stolen).

I also enjoying watching movies. Like music, I would not specify a particular genre I like most. I have seen many independent movies, as well as the so-called blockbusters. In general, I like tragedy more than comedy. A tragic ending is more likely to reveal the social or individual problems, and force people to retrospect. The best tragedy I have seen so far is Requiem for a Dream. See this page for what I have watched recently.

Many other things could also trigger my interests. I like playing around with fancy technical gadgets (but I wouldn't buy them). Various arts also attract me: I enjoy operas very much, and is a subscriber to the LA Opera's OperaU program; I have practiced a little bit with 3D modeling softwares; I (kind of) like dancing, and had some experience in ballroom dance and hiphop. Reading is also a big hobby of mine. Mostly I read science fictions. Here is a list of the books I have read since I came to U.S.

In conclusion, a lot of things can make me interested.
